EEES 2024

Emotions in Engineering Education Symposium, 9-11 September, University of Aveiro. Portugal

Theme: “Building a dynamic and transformative agenda for emotions in engineering education research”

The main focus of the symposium will be on interaction and collaboration. Most sessions will focus on in-depth discussions and workshops. Examples of activities include:

  • Critical discussions about the purposes of engaging in research on emotions in engineering education, who benefits from certain research and teaching practices, and who may be excluded.
  • Work sessions to support both new and ongoing international research collaborations (e.g., plan co-authored papers, funding applications, plan seminars or other events, formulate goals for the research network)
  • Discussions and workshops for collaborative learning (e.g., trying out specific methods of analysis, and developing an understanding of the broad range of research on emotions in engineering education).

The symposium programme will be preliminary and may change during the symposium to attend to emerging interests and concerns in the group.

Symposium ethos

As in previous editions of EEES, we will not only talk about emotions, but we will also do and experience emotions, individually and collectively. Therefore, openness to new perspectives and experiences, mutual respect, and empathy are the basis for all activities during the symposium.

Keynote speakers

Jessica T. DeCuir-Gunby, Ph.D. is a Professor of Educational Psychology in the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.

Note: The keynote sessions will be open to a larger audience both on-site, at the University of Aveiro, and via a live webinar.

Registration for attending the keynote session online will open later.

The number of participants is limited to allow close interaction and in-depth discussion. Participants will be selected based on their prior engagement in the Emotions in Engineering Education Network; cultural, disciplinary, and gender diversity; and voluntary contributions to organizing activities at the symposium and ensuring it runs smoothly. We welcome both experienced researchers and those new to engineering education research and/or emotion research.
